Internally, the structure was divided into two main levels featuring a complex network of vaulted residential chambers, formal reception halls, and internal courtyards. It functioned as both a private fortress and a theater of social prestige, where elite rulers could host diplomatic guests, manage regional trade networks, and display their high socio-economic status away from the crowded city center.

The systematic scientific exploration and documentation of this architectural wonder have been spearheaded by the Ancient Merv Project, a long-term collaborative international venture between the Insтιтute of Archaeology at University College London (UCL) and the Ministry of Culture of Turkmenistan, alongside local experts from the State Historical and Cultural Park “Ancient Merv.” Early pH๏τographic documentation from the late 19th and early 20th centuries—contrasted with modern views—initially highlighted the severe erosion facing the structure. Through meticulous modern excavations, architectural scanning, and stratigraphic analysis, these organizations have successfully mapped the internal layout of the koshk, shedding light on medieval Central Asian domestic life, water management systems, and earthen construction techniques.

Today, Great Kyz Kala holds profound historical significance as a key component of the Ancient Merv UNESCO World Heritage Site. Because unfired mud-brick ruins are exceptionally vulnerable to rapid environmental degradation, the monument has been the focus of cutting-edge, non-invasive conservation efforts. International teams have used localized clay mixtures to stabilize the crumbling bases of the corrugations and prevent structural collapse.
