The fabrication process required master potters to mold thick, heavy ceramic cylinders with distinct, widened collars. These flanged rims allowed the tubes to be securely interlocked and stacked vertically inside a hand-dug shaft measuring up to ten meters deep. To ensure the functionality of the soakaway system, the walls of each terracotta cylinder were deliberately pierced with small, round holes prior to firing, facilitating the controlled lateral escape of moisture into the surrounding subsoil.

Architecturally, the installation of these ring-drains required meticulous subterranean packing to prevent structural failure. Conversely, some structurally identical ring-drains served a purely ritual function, acting as channels of communication to the underworld where families deposited unbroken pottery offerings to appease ancestral spirits.

This groundbreaking subterranean network was brought to light during the historic joint expeditions of the British Museum and the University of Pennsylvania Museum, conducted between 1922 and 1934. The excavation was directed by the renowned British archaeologist Sir Leonard Woolley, accompanied by his wife and close collaborator, Katharine Woolley, both of whom are depicted meticulously measuring and documenting the exposed shafts.
