Unlike movable artifacts discovered through subterranean excavation, this “discovery” is part of a living archaeological site—a monument that has remained in continuous use but has been meticulously documented by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The hall serves as a concentrated gallery of the high-classical style of the region, where every inch of the structure is a testament to the sophisticated urban planning and religious devotion of the era.

This masterpiece dates to the 16th Century CE, specifically during the height of the Vijayanagara Empire. Under the reign of emperors like Krishnadevaraya and his successors, the empire fostered a “Golden Age” of stone masonry. The 100-Pillar Mandapam was constructed approximately between 1530 and 1540 CE. The dating is corroborated by numerous lithic inscriptions found on the temple walls, written in Telugu and Tamil scripts, which detail the grants and the specific periods of construction. This era is characterized by the transition from simple structural support to highly decorative, flamboyant stone carvings that pushed the physical limits of the medium.

The primary material utilized is Grey Granite, a locally sourced plutonic rock known for its extreme hardness and durability. The technical brilliance of the “Kanchipuram Chains” lies in the fact that they are monolithic—meaning each chain and its links were carved from the same single block of stone as the corner pillar and the ceiling cornice. There are no joints, adhesives, or interlocking metal components. The “craftsmanship” involved a subtractive process where master masons used fine-tipped iron chisels and stone hammers to hollow out the center of the granite blocks, slowly releasing each link so that they could swing freely while remaining part of the parent stone. This required a profound understanding of structural geology and the internal stresses of granite to prevent the brittle material from snapping during the delicate carving process.

While the stone chains appear as delicate ornaments, they served both a functional and a symbolic purpose. Symbolically, the chain represents the interconnectivity of the divine and the earthly realms. Surrounding the chains are intricate bas-reliefs depicting scenes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, alongside figures of Yalis (mythical leonine creatures). The presence of the chain, hanging from the mouth of a Yali or a Makara, signifies the control of primordial cosmic forces by the divine power housed within the temple.

The systematic study and preservation of this site have been spearheaded by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), particularly the Chennai Circle. Since the early 20th century, British-era archaeologists like Alexander Rea and later Indian scholars have documented these features to understand the evolution of Vijayanagara art. Today, the ASI maintains the hall as a protected monument of national importance. These stone chains remain a primary subject for ethno-archaeological studies, as they provide a direct link to the “guild secrets” of ancient Indian stone smiths. The preservation of these chains is critical, as they represent a peak of human manual dexterity that modern mechanical tools still struggle to replicate with such seamless, monolithic precision.
