SENATOBIA, Miss. — A group is planning to ask Senatobia city officials for answers after an officer-involved shooting outside a Walmart that killed a toddler and left a woman in critical condition this weekend.

Family says 1-year-old Kohen Wiley died after police sH๏τ at the car he was in Sunday afternoon in the parking lot of the Senatobia Walmart.

So far, on Monday, there were a few answers.

“I’m just at a loss for words, to be honest. Somebody needs to held accountable for it,” said Carlos Haynes, Kohen’s grandfather.

Kohen’s family says he died at the hospital in Senatobia after a bullet pierced the car he was in on Sunday afternoon. Video showed at least one bullet hole in the front windshield of a car we spotted at the hospital, and the pᴀssenger-side window was also heavily damaged.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, which is now handling the case, says officers were initially called to the store just after 2 p.m. for a shoplifting call.

They say officers saw two adults and a child leave the store and jump into a car. As officers tried to stop the car, they say the driver drove in their direction, nearly hitting an officer.

At least one officer sH๏τ at the vehicle. The car continued to take off, and a short time later arrived at the hospital, where Kohen died.

The Tate County Sheriff’s Office said that deputies were investigating something unrelated to the incident, and their ᴀssistance was then requested.

Much of the investigation could rest on what is seen on video, as cameras are everywhere outside the Walmart.

One witness video showed the chaos as officers ran through the parking lot.

A woman who witnessed the shooting, who did not want to be identified, said she saw the whole incident.

“I seen the officers take off running, not in the car, I’m talking about on feet, and these are the Sheriffs and the police,” she said. “They’re running through the parking lot and I see the car take off you know, so in my head, I’m like, I know they’re not chasing the car, they don’t think they’re going to catch the car. Then I hear gunsH๏τs and I’m like, I know they’re not shooting at a car that’s leaving in a public, this is Walmart.”

A separate witness said he heard two gunsH๏τs. He said law enforcement was already waiting in the parking lot as two women exited with one box of diapers, one holding baby Kohen.

We have reported extensively over the years about the Seantobia Police Department.

“Senatobia Police Department get away with too much stuff,” said Carolyn Stokes, Kohen’s great-grandmother. “I hear about it all the time, it’s in the news all the time, y’all probably down here all the time, recording this stuff, but it’s just too much.”

Last year, at the same Walmart, the department came under fire after a woman had a Taser pulled on her and was tackled to the ground after the department claimed she illegally parked in a handicapped spot. The woman claimed she had just dropped off her grandmother at the store.

In 2023, the case of a 10-year-old boy made national news after he was detained for urinating in public at an attorney’s office private parking lot.

After the incident, the police chief at the time said one of the officers involved was no longer employed, and other officers would be disciplined.

In 2022, the police department and the housing authority went head-to-head after what many called a rough arrest of a 31-year-old man was caught on camera.

Since these incidents, the police department has new leadership.

WREG went to Senatobia City Hall to request the police department’s shoplifting response policy, the number of shoplifting calls received at the Walmart in the last six months, as well as body-worn and dash camera footage from officers.

We also spoke with the mayor, who would not say how many officers were involved in the incident or whether anyone was on administrative leave during the investigation.

People in town we talked to hoped for transparency in the investigation.
